Photo Essay: Back Street Barbers By Fadly

Back street barbers are an interesting sight indeed. Just a lone rusty barber’s chair, sheltered from the elements by a canvas sheet.
Elderly men in queue, on old plastic chairs, quietly keeping to themselves while they wait their turn.

A small cupboard with interesting tools. A manual clipper, a strip of leather.

A dying trade.

I came across Mr Tan’s barber shop along a quiet back lane near Arab St.
I asked to take a few pictures and Mr Tan gladly agreed.
“Nice or not?” He quipped jokingly.

A quick chat with Mr Tan revealed that he has been a barber for 22 years.
At just $6 a haircut, its much cheaper than the $10 salons we have popping up around our island.
You get a free shave too!
