Photo Essay: People In Colour, France By Derrick

It is my very first time in France and also my very first time to extensively use a rangefinder camera.
I have been using a DSLR for the most part of my photography, I do however, started my photography with a Asahi K1000 SLR with a 50mm lens. At that time, even with only a 50mm Pentax lens, I have never felt the prime lens was limited in its fixed focal length.

Ever since my foray into DSLR with it’s massive zoom lenses, shooting with only a 50mm prime lens somewhat makes my vision feels claustrophobic everytime I look into the viewfinder. And so during my 14 days in France with a Canon VI-T and Canon 50mm f1.2 lens, I have to adapt to a new shooting style.

I felt that 50mm is neither really a portrait lens nor a wide angle lens. To make it wide, I just need to take a few steps back, and a few steps nearer for a portrait shot. Nevertheless, after spending some time with it, I eventually grew fond of it.

Loaded with only Kodak Ektar film, I found comfort in this lens when capturing pictures of people.
