After dark, the Yakuza hustle for clients on the streets of Kabukicho, even as it rains. My girlfriend and I, armed with umbrella and cameras, shoot the denizens of this night-time world – an almost-metaphysical realm of sex, hedonism, and debauchery far removed from the Tokyo of the daytime. Cheap, see-through umbrellas are abundant, not only shielding its users from the rain, but also strangely keeping their identities hidden. Everyone is a faceless silhouette passing through, with somewhere to be or someone to be with.
