In Zone Focus: The Mistake That Made the Picture By Ray Toei

This picture, titled Camel Cigarettes, was done using a digital Rangefinder, the Epson R-D1 with a 50/f2 Summicron.

I love the tonality and texture of the image, it isn’t smooth but grainy enough to give an edgy look to it.

It’s actually a mistake turned good. I used a simple on camera flash, as it flashed, the right-to-camera studio soft box flashed as well (due to the optical slave device detecting on-camera flash).

In normal studio setting, the front is usually the main light while the side is the fill-light. In this case, the side becomes the main light while the front is the fill light.

Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than to be right. – Ray Toei

Gear used: Epson R-D1 + Leica Summicron 50mm F2
