Photo Essay: Streets Of Hong Kong By Mervin Lim

Last June, I went to Hong Kong for holiday and managed to shoot some of my most liked photographs so far. Considering that Hong Kong is a densely populated city, there were constant opportunities for street photography almost everywhere. Being in a foreign country, everything seem so fresh and most of the shots came naturally. I commuted mainly by bus and MTR, giving me a greater opportunity to be always around people.

Prior to my trip, I was already a fan of Jonathan van Smit (K_iwi)’s works on flickr, and would really like to experience and see for myself how Hong Kong was really like. I must say, Hong Kong is truly a fantastic place for street photography. I guess this is pretty much due to the fact the city itself is so ever busting, combined with the tight living spaces and concrete jungle.

Be sure to take photos during the night. I feel that is when Hong Kong comes to live! The flashing billboards in Tsim Sha Shui and the lights and activity around Lan Kwai Fong are certainly a sight to behold. One would be surprised how brightly lit is it at night. It is so easy to roam the streets, get lost and chance upon interesting scenes and people. The narrow alleyways, neon signboards and street markets are definitely not a common sight in Singapore.
